In preparation for our next session (homework for Session 5):
- In your Laulima course, take a screenshot of your Laulima homepage and annotate the screenshot (e.g., by using Skitch or Preview). Next, in your Google site, create a new page (e.g., titled “Screenshot”) and insert the annotated screenshot (see this step-by-step tutorial).
- Create a brief tutorial with at least 3 screenshots on any topic using Google Docs. Next, in your Google Site, create a new webpage called “Tutorial” and insert your tutorial there (either as a Google Doc or as a PDF file).
- Perform all tasks listed in Manage Google Drive Apps, including posting a screenshot of your added app on your Google Site.
- Respond to a question posted in the Laulima discussion forum: Personal Learning Networks.
- Complete the “Interaction” and “Course Content” sections in your Online Course Outline.
- Please note: We will be meeting in Zoom for the remainder of this series. Please click to join by 1:30pm Wednesday, March 25. Link has been shared with you by email. (Zoom’s security guidelines discourage open posting of Zoom meeting URLs on pages such as this one.)
During the fifth session:
- Make note of the Center for Language & Technology’s UHM Online Learning – COVID-19 page, with special attention to our virtual office hours and our Teaching Online Basics document.
- Check our summary of Google Site page types (with examples)
- Video: Pedagogical Uses of Video and a Video Resource List
- Audio: Pedagogical Uses of Audio and an Audio Resource List
- Record a short (1-2 minute) video of yourself with a webcam using QuickTime Player (Mac), Movie Maker (Windows), Loom, Zoom, or one of these methods. In the video, give an overview of the course you are developing, suitable for students to view the first time they enter the course.
- Example recorded in Zoom – no slides
- Example recorded in Loom – with slides and thumbnail
- If you are planning to use YouTube with a non-UH (regular) Gmail account, you will need to create one (if you don’t have one) and log in.
- Upload your video to your YouTube (Google) account. Alternatively, you can add YouTube as a Consumer App to your UH account and upload your video to your UH YouTube account.
- Create a new page on your Google Site and embed the YouTube video.

Session 6: Show and Tell
Our last session will be on April 8 postponed to April 29. As you know, you can receive badges that certify the completion of the tasks listed under Badge Criteria. The deadline to complete all Badge tasks is Monday, April 20 postponed to Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
In preparation for the last session (Session 6):
The main purpose of the last session is for you and us to get feedback. You will be making a 5-minute presentation on the design work you have done in this series. We recommend that you make your presentation by means of a narrated slideshow (with or without video “bubble”) or just a video narration, 5 minutes in length. The new Chrome plug-in Loom is very convenient for this purpose. Ideally, you will have exported this product as a video and published it to YouTube or another online video publishing platform.
During the first portion of Session 6 we will focus on your projects, and during the second part of the session we will focus on getting feedback about the series. We propose these three options to organize your part:
- Option 1: elucidation of your overall plan for the course you are working to design in your Online Course Outline, providing some details;
- Option 2: a detailed description of one instructional sequence from the course in detail, with particular attention to how you have designed interaction and structured your tasks;
- Option 3: explanation of a specific design problem that you have encountered, the steps you have taken towards solving it, and your current expectations regarding the outcome.
We highly recommend that, once your 5-minute video is ready, you contact us for a brief trial run in Zoom.
In addition to your presentation, please complete the following two tasks:
- Respond to the Video use in your class prompt in the Laulima discussion forum
- Finalize your Online Course Outline
