This position resides within the Center for Language & Technology (CLT), home to a vibrant, fast-paced environment that supports a wide array of instructional technology and research projects, some of which have national impact. The CLT supports the informed use and integration of technology into world language instruction and research in the College. The Program Specialist manages all daily CLT operations and provides and coordinates support for various projects. This individual proactively seeks input from relevant College faculty, particularly focusing on improving technology use and integration, and proposes, creates and implements programs that meet identified needs. Occasionally, this individual also provides on-demand training in the software and systems supported by the CLT.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides project management support for the Center for Language & Technology (CLT) initiatives, such as professional learning programs and events, including those that are externally funded.
  • Assesses language faculty pedagogical needs and designs new or expands existing professional learning programs accordingly, specifically with respect to digital technologies and effective instructional strategies.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for CLT patrons by dealing with a wide range of requests via a variety of access channels (phone, email, website, in person).
  • Serves as the main liaison between the CLT and college faculty.
  • Proposes and designs activities or events that promote the range of services and resources available to CLT patrons.
  • Provides advice to departments and/or college faculty in the area of language technology.
  • Monitors developments in the field of L2 pedagogy, instructional design, and technology in order to remain current on effective strategies and best practices in these fields through professional listservs, workshops, conferences or colleagues or by attending designated training sessions as necessary.
  • Monitors and generates regular reports of usage of CLT websites, online resources, facilities, and equipment and of other activities, and recommends updates or modifications.
  • Hires and supervises CLT student employees and graduate assistants. Ensures adequate staffing of CLT facilities and successful mentoring of students.
  • Develops or updates new policies for CLT facility usage, media requests, equipment checkout, etc.
  • Manages and coordinates matters related to day-to-day CLT facility use, media production, equipment checkout, etc., including but not limited to handling of requests, ordering supplies and equipment, and collecting usage fees.
  • Recommends and is responsible for the purchase of media and equipment, prepares requisitions and other forms, tracks orders and forms through the system to ensure timely delivery, and maintains necessary files.
  • Manages and coordinates communication and recordkeeping regarding software site licenses, subscriptions, copyright, etc.
  • Assists with the creation of content and maintenance of CLT websites and social media.
  • Orients faculty in the use of CLT facilities, hardware, and software, and troubleshoots problems.
  • In cooperation with the various language programs, coordinates language placement exams and assists in the administration of language placement exams as needed.
  • Maintains resources used in the various language programs.
  • Interfaces with the college departments, the visiting public, and the media to present information about the CLT and its functions.
  • Serves on the CLT Advisory Committee along with college faculty representatives to determine CLT policies, services, and functions.
  • Serves as the telecom coordinator for the unit to handle all requests for telecommunications services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Educational Technology, Applied Linguistics, Public Administration, Business Administration, Arts & Sciences, Educational Administration, or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for program and/or project management; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in project management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with program and/or project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic, deadline-driven, complex, team-based environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using productivity software (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and market events and programs.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Experience working with social media and website maintenance.
  • Ability to provide basic tech support assistance for commonly used classroom technologies.
  • Ability to travel independently in a timely and efficient manner to various locations. Fulfilled by possession of a valid Driver’s License or use of other means of transportation which meets the position’s needs.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Educational Technology, Applied Linguistics, World Languages, Educational Administration, Business Administration, Arts & Sciences, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • BA in instructional technology or a world language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues and current trends in the area of technology integration in world language instruction.
  • Ability to identify and recommend appropriate instructional technologies.
  • Experience in planning, marketing, and promoting special events in higher education.
  • Language teaching experience.
  • Working knowledge of instructional technology and/or pedagogical uses of technology in world language education.
