learner & user xperience (lux) lab

Location: 256 Moore Hall
Hours of operation: 9a–4.30p, M–F

The CLT’s Learner & User Xperience (LUX) Lab is designed to accommodate research projects by faculty and graduate students in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters (CALL) that require one-on-one interaction between a researcher/instructor and a participant/student. Priority to reserve and use the LUX Lab will be given with the consideration of the purpose for which the lab is requested.

Eligibility
  • Faculty and graduate students in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters (CALL)
  • UHM units outside of the CALL (fee assessed)
  • Non-UH organizations and individuals (fee assessed)

Purpose
  • Projects related to the mission of the CLT or the CALL
  • CLT-sponsored or CLT-supported projects
  • Projects for academic purposes not related to the CLT mission (fee assessed)
Examples of projects that can be run in the lab:
  • eye-tracking studies in CALL, SLA, and language assessment
  • eye-tracking usability studies (e.g., piloting of web-based instructional materials)
  • one-on-one computer-based language research
  • studies that utilize electroencephalography (EEG)
Lab Equipment

The lab consists of a researcher station equipped with a computer and a participant station equipped with a computer, a web camera, a headset with a microphone, a remote 150 Hz eye tracker, and a wireless 14-channel EEG headset.

  • Dell OptiPlex 9020 Mini Tower
  • Two Asus 24” monitors with a keyboard and a mouse
  • Gazepoint GP3 HD (150 Hz) and Gazepoint GP3 (60 Hz) eye trackers
  • Emotiv EPOC+ EEG headset
  • Web camera
  • Headset with a microphone

Software
Lab Use Policy
  • The use of the LUX lab requires a reservation (see the Reservation Guidelines below).
  • Permission to reserve and use the lab will be granted based on the purpose for which the lab is requested.
  • Users who intend to use the lab for research purposes are required to complete a short training session. To request a training session, please contact TBA.  Requests for using an EEG headset will be considered on a case-by-case basis and users might be asked to cover operating costs. 
  • No drinks or food are allowed in the lab.
  • Lab users are not permitted to install any software on the lab computer without the CLT’s approval. This rule is enforced to prevent any malware from infecting the computer and damaging the existing research data.
Reservation Guidelines

To reserve the LUX lab, go to the Online reservation form on the CLT website to select a date and time when you will need the lab, and submit the following information:

  • your full name, position, and department;
  • dates and times when you will need the lab;
  • purpose for which you want to use the lab.

If you intend to reserve the lab for a research study, a copy of the corresponding IRB documentation may be requested in order to confirm the reservation.
