The CLT Orientation to Online Learning is a professional learning series offered by the Center for Language & Technology to faculty and graduate teaching assistants who teach language classes in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The series designers and facilitators are all faculty in the CLT who are also active members of two national Centers housed within the CLT, namely the National Foreign Language Resource Center and the Language Flagship Technology Innovation Center.
The series aims at introducing the participants to the basic principles and concepts of online teaching and learning. Instructors who complete the orientation will gain basic familiarity with theoretical and practical aspects of designing an online course, starting from either the adaptation of a traditional course or the creation of an entirely new one, as well as with the resources available to them at UH. They will also be able to earn digital badges that recognize the successful completion of the series.
What does the series cover?
The series emphasizes world language teaching and learning. Participants are expected to be familiar with the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Organized around the concept of interaction (learner-instructor, learner-learner, learner-content, and learner-community-of-practice interaction), the series helps participants develop skills in content development and technology.
What is my time commitment?
The series progresses through six 90-minute synchronous sessions supplemented with online content and asynchronous interaction. An additional 2 hours of work between sessions is needed to work on tasks and approximately 4 hours after the last synchronous session will be needed to complete all tasks associated with the badges.
How do I provide evidence of my achievements?
Participants who complete assigned tasks earn basic badges in three areas: Content Development, Interaction, and Technology. Participants who earn all three basic badges and attend at least 5 sessions earn the full series badge.
What is a badge?
A badge is a digital mark indicating a completion of a learning event that leads to the acquisition of a specific skill, quality, or knowledge. In a nutshell, digital badges are small images that contain validated and shareable information about the learning event completed by the badge owner and the acquired competencies. The badges offered by the Center for Language & Technology are created using the Open Badges standard, and we use Badgr to manage and issue badges.
